This morning, Chase sang with his school choir for the Veteran's Day program. I don't know if most schools have Veteran's Day programs, but this was a nice one, with a Lieutenant Colonel teaching the kids about veterans and being thankful for their service. Before the program began, I was reading Kate Braestrup's new book, "Beginner's Grace," and the following passage seemed appropriate:
True gratitude isn't cringing or uncomfortable at all: It is the purest expression of joy. Ungrateful people--you may have met a few--are not happy people. If we humans were making good use of our consciousness, we would wander around in a flabbergasted daze of gratitude all the time: I could be hungry...but instead, I've got french fries! There could be nothing...but instead, there's something!
The program was lovely, as is gratitude.
